What every hydraulics user ought to know about taking care of their machines...

How to Squeeze Hundreds of Hours in Extra Service Life From Your Hydraulic Machines, Eliminate Unnecessary Breakdowns, Reduce Unscheduled Downtime and Save Thousands of Dollars on Your Machine Operating Costs Every Year.

Read the short story below to learn how YOU can profit from Brendan Casey's time-tested and proven maintenance SYSTEM for hydraulic equipment -- AND get $92 of FREE stuff -- But ONLY if you're quick!

Brendan Casey,
hydraulics author, educator and publisher.

Dear Hydraulics User or Professional,

Suppose this happened on your watch:

A hydraulic machine you depend on breaks down. Your in-house techs are out of ideas and scratching their heads. So you call in outside help at a stiff hourly rate. But they're at least two, maybe three hours away. And this means at least one production deadline will be missed. Meanwhile, your staff are playing cards in the lunchroom on full pay.

On top of the unscheduled downtime, you have no idea what the final repair bill is going to be. And if all this isn't bad enough, your boss has got his boot on your neck. Because the higher ups have got him in their sights. The you-know-what is coming down from a great height. So much so, it's possible someone will get fired over this.

Better call the wife and tell her you won't be home for dinner. And being that it's Friday, she won't be pleased to hear this weekend's long-planned mini vacation may have to be postponed too...

If you've spent much time working around hydraulic equipment you'll relate to this story on some level. How can I be so sure? Because the majority of hydraulic equipment users are not proactive when it comes to the reliability of their hydraulic machines. They're reactive. They worry about it when it breaks down. But as the above story shows, this approach is very inconvenient, extremely stressful and horribly expensive.

Which is why if you master the skill of proactive maintenance, you will hold in your hands the key to saving and pocketing a wad of money...

directly, if you're a hydraulic machine owner;

OR, by extension, if you work for one, the key to making yourself more valuable and indispensable (think: pay rises and promotions);

OR, if you so choose, the key to becoming 'the wise man at the top of the mountain' who others seek out and reward handsomely for advice.

Let me prove it to you...

If you're a hydraulic equipment owner or you work for one, you already know how expensive hydraulic components are these days. We're talking thousands and in some cases, tens of thousands of dollars.

So when you don't get maximum mileage from them it hurts your bottom line.

If you're an owner-operator, it's a direct hit on your bank account.

If you're an equipment manager or supervisor, it trashes your maintenance budget -- and maybe even affects your performance bonus and/or career prospects (gulp!). But the reality is....

At Least 90% Of Premature Failures Are Avoidable

In fact, according to industry sources, more than 70% of spare parts sold for hydraulic equipment are used to replace defective components. And the cause of 90% of these defects can be traced to improper operation and maintenance.

And these numbers are supported by my own observation while working in hydraulic repair shops over many years. During this time I kept seeing the same pattern repeat itself over and over:

  1. Failed hydraulic component comes into shop along with worried owner who's anxious to know why it has failed after a relatively short time in service.
  2. Based on what I saw after teardown, I would explain the cause of failure -- and how it could have been prevented.
  3. Machine owner leaves thousands of dollars poorer with repaired component and a very costly lesson on hydraulic equipment maintenance.

In other words, during my two and a half decades as a hydraulics industry insider, I've been in the fortunate position of being able to observe -- and learn from -- the mistakes and omissions hydraulic equipment users make when it comes to taking care of their machines. Mistakes that make a lot of machinery dealers and repair shop owners very rich. And I've worked for enough of them to know.

We've already talked about how costly hydraulic pumps, motors and cylinders are these days. We're talking thousands and in some cases, tens of thousands of dollars. So when you consider how BIG the spare parts business is globally, it's not too much of a leap to suggest that poor maintenance practices cost hydraulic equipment users hundreds of millions of dollars every year. And I'm not alone in making this call:

"I think Mr Casey is being very conservative in his estimate of failure attributed to lack of maintenance. I have 40 years of hydraulics experience and would put that number considerably higher. If modern hydraulic components are installed and maintained properly, the spare parts business wouldn't be viable."

Verne Middleton
Hydraulics & Lubrication Engineer
Olin Corp.

The good news is you can avoid paying for your machine dealer's holiday home -- and save yourself a truckload of downtime and aggravation as well -- just by following proven maintenance principles.

Problem is, the information you need to prevent unnecessary failures and maximize the service life of your hydraulic equipment isn't widely available. It's not that it's rocket science. Far from it. But you won't find it in the machine manual and it's not taught in your everyday, 'how-it-works', hydraulics class.

As a result, most owners, operators, mechanics, technicians and engineers are not on top of this issue. And I'm not alone in this view either:

"For the last 13 years I was technical manager for Demag/Komatsu mining shovels Southern Africa. And I know there's a SHOCKING amount of IGNORANCE in the field of hydraulics: oil sampling, oil viscosity, filtration, component change-out procedures and cooling systems are often blatantly ignored or misunderstood and the machine manufacturer is then put under pressure for warranties."

Gerald Annandale
Dosco Precision Hydraulics

But it's not their fault. They just haven't had the opportunity to learn. And the reason for this is simple: Very few people really know this stuff. And of those who do, most aren't willing to teach it. Why? Because as I've explained already, there's a lot more money to be made by fixing it after it breaks.

And as long as there are hydraulic equipment owners, mechanics, technicians and maintenance people out there who believe hydraulic equipment doesn't require any kind of special attention, this situation won't change. But the fact of the matter is, it's not realistic to expect a hydraulic machine to run for 10,000 hours, without doing anything more than changing the filters, and not have any problems.

More so now than ever. Over the past 30 years, the performance, sophistication and operating pressures of hydraulic equipment have increased significantly. And as a result, modern hydraulic equipment is not only more expensive to fix when it breaks, proactive maintenance is essential to maximize service life and minimize operating costs.

So how did I get to become an expert at this?

Let me start by saying I didn't learn it from a book or through a course at a community college or university. What I know has been accumulated during 26 years working on everything from farm machinery right up to 600-ton hydraulic excavators used in open-cut mining.

And I don't mean yapping about it from the comfort of an air-conditioned office either. I mean hands-on, at-the-coal-face experience. As you know, you can't buy this sort of education. In fact, as I mentioned earlier, THE most valuable education I got in this area was being able to learn from the mistakes I saw being made by hundreds of hydraulic equipment owners, while working in hydraulic repair shops.

In terms of what these mistakes cost these customers in repairs, it's safe to say my accumulation of this knowledge cost a bunch of hydraulic equipment owners $1 million dollars and perhaps more. I'm not kidding.

Anyway, back in 2000 when I left my last job in the hydraulics industry to go out on my own, I started writing articles about hydraulic equipment maintenance (and the lack of it) and posting them online. And I didn't stop. Now, nearly 15 years later, you can find snippets of my stuff in every far-flung corner of the internet.

So last year I had a 'light-bulb' moment. It occurred to me that if I gathered up this vast body of information and made it easily accessible in one place, a lot of hydraulic equipment users would benefit. By 'benefit' I mean: improve their machines' reliability and reduce its operating cost.

And I can tell you now, this was not a 5-minute job. It wasn't just the 15-years of writing I had to pull together. But also 15-years of insights from consulting assignments. And 15-years worth of member Q&A's. Plus the lessons learned from the 10 years before that I spent working in hydraulic repair shops.

And as already mentioned, it was while working in hydraulic repair shops that my eyes were really opened. Because it was there that I was able to see for myself the costly mistakes and omissions being made by hundreds of hydraulic equipment owners.

Anyway, the end result of this labor is: The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook.

It goes much deeper on the subject than I've ever gone before (Insider Secrets to Hydraulics only scratched the surface!). And like its companion text, The Hydraulic Troubleshooting Handbook, you don't have to understand every detail of a hydraulic machine to leverage the knowledge it contains. You merely have to grasp and follow PRINCIPLES. And when it comes to hydraulic equipment maintenance, there are 15 of them.

So Who IS this For?

The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook is designed for anyone who:

  1. wishes to capitalize on the very real shortage of skilled maintenance people out there (think: increased job opportunities and earnings);

    OR...
  2. does not want to be held hostage by it.

This means if you're a:

  • Fitter
  • Millwright
  • Mechanic
  • Technician
  • Engineer
  • Mechanically-minded hydraulic equipment owner or user

OR, like I was when I started out:

  • someone with good mechanical aptitude, who wants to add another 'string to your bow';

then read on, because The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook is definitely for you.

The 80/20 Rule of Maintenance Gains

You may be familiar with the 80/20 rule or Pareto's Law - named after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto who first recognized it in 1897. Put simply, Pareto's Law states an almost universal truth that nothing is evenly distributed.

Applied to maintenance, the 80/20 rule means an 80 percent reduction in your machine's operating cost will come from just 20 percent of your maintenance effort. And 80 percent of your breakdowns and downtime are caused by 20 percent of the possible faults. What this means is, not all maintenance tasks are equal. It also means BIG gains in machine reliability and cost saving are easy to achieve. IF you understand hydraulic maintenance principles and their order of importance.

I'm going to say that again: BIG gains in machine reliability and cost saving are easy to achieve. IF you understand hydraulic maintenance principles and their order of importance.

"The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook really is worth its weight in gold... Chapter 19 was a real delight; a real life example of what I come across almost every day: second hand machines without service history, no operating data, money and time constraints and so on. The way you proceed to carry out this maintenance audit is very helpful and instructive."

Maxime St-Gelais,
FELCO
St-Felicien QC, Canada

One of the many things that makes The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook unique is, I lay out 15 principles I've identified as essential for effective maintenance. And by 'effective maintenance' I mean: maximum reliability for minimum cost.

When understood and adhered to, these 15 principles become the anchor for a logical, step-by-step maintenance SYSTEM anyone can follow - whether you're a seasoned pro, or a still-wet-behind-the-ears novice. And it's the very same system I use to achieve reliability gains and cost savings for my consulting clients. Something for which they pay me large sums of money for.

What's the alternative? There really isn't one. Other than to do what most hydraulic equipment owners do: worry about it when it breaks down. And it will eventually. Lost production. Missed delivery deadlines. Staff playing cards in the lunch room on full pay. The cost of outside help at a stiff hourly rate. Component replacement costs. The boss's (or customer's) boot on your neck. Not only is this option stressful, it's horribly expensive.

If on the other hand you're armed with The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook, you're a man with a PLAN. And it covers much more than my time-tested and proven maintenance SYSTEM. Here's a taste of what else is in store:

Begin with the end in mind. Why hydraulic equipment reliability is the responsibility of the machine owner--and NOT the machine builder. How to ensure you get a reliable and lean hydraulic machine in the first place -- page 114.

Better than filters. Why the OIL you buy is the most important proactive maintenance decision you'll make -- pages 19.

PLUS, there's much more than I can list here. But at least now you get the picture.

"If more hydraulics users had this information us manufacturers would have less problems."

Phil Serre,
Fmr International Director of Training
Schwing America

It's taken me 25 years to put all the pieces of this puzzle together on my own. If you've got quarter of a century to spare, you could probably do the same. But I don't recommend it. Not when The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook lays it all out in front of you in an easy to understand format.

I only wish this handbook was available to me when I started out. Because it would certainly have fast-tracked my way up the food-chain. You can get there slow. Or you can get there fast. Frankly, slow sucks. But the good news is you can always buy speed. And in this context, The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook is a 'Ferrari'. Here's what I mean:

"Brendan, thanks again for all your shared knowledge. I've learnt more from YOU in 6 months than I've been taught by my bosses at work in the last five and a half years."

Ryan Read,
Heavy Vehicle Mechanic
V&H Trucks Inc, Kansas City USA

Why would you wanna work your way up the ladder s-l-o-w-l-y when you can stand on my shoulders and 'leap-frog' your way to the top? Plus, when it comes to hydraulic equipment maintenance, if you don't buy this knowledge upfront - you'll pay much more for it at the repair shop later.

What's a Book Like This Worth?

So how much should you expect to invest to own such a book? Well firstly, The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook is not the sort of book you can value by the page or pound. Because if you use it to prevent just one breakdown; prevent one premature component failure, its sticker price is utterly irrelevant.

"The information contained in this handbook WILL save you money."

Steve Close,
Maintenance Supervisor
BGC Contracting

That said, I personally spend thousands of dollars every year adding to my own technical library, and I've got one of the most extensive private hydraulics libraries around. Based on what I've paid for similar books, the right price for The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook is around the $150 mark.

But I'm not asking this much. Nowhere near it. Reason being, this is NOT a book for academic types wearing thick glasses and white coats. It's a book for guys who work at the 'coal face'. Guys who don't mind getting oil on their hands. And for this reason I want to make it accessible to as many of these folks as possible.

"This should have been required learning when I did my apprenticeship 13 years ago!"

Darren Mackie,
Heavy Duty Fitter/Mechanic
BHP Billiton Iron Ore

Which means if you get your copy of The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook today, it's yours for only $87.00. That's a saving of $63 on what you'd pay for a comparable book. (Not that there are any comparable books devoted specifically to hydraulic equipment maintenance and reliability!)

PLUS, even though this is a great deal already, if you're one of the FIRST 7 to order The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook BEFORE , I'm going to make it even better by throwing in the following 6 FREE Bonuses valued at $92...

FREE Bonus #1
How To Consolidate Your Oil Inventory ebook - $12 Value

The foundation on which the reliability of every hydraulic machine depends is the oil the system is filled with. And these days there's a dizzying array of choices available. Which means if you own or are responsible for multiple pieces of hydraulic equipment, chances are you have more than one type of hydraulic oil taking up space in your oil store. Consolidating this inventory is desirable for a number of reasons. In this ebook I explain the very real risks involved in consolidating your hydraulic oil inventory, and how to manage them effectively.

FREE Bonus #2
Hydraulic Filter Selection And Placement video - $15 Value

It's no secret that the effective control of contamination is largely dependent upon the selection and placement of the filters in a system. And while there are guidelines for this, there are no hard and fast rules. In this video I use a hydrostatic transmission circuit to illustrate some of the circuit-specific issues which must be considered when choosing hydraulic filter locations.

FREE Bonus #3
How To Purge A Hydraulic Cylinder video - $15 Value

When a hydraulic cylinder has a small diameter and/or is located a long distance from its directional control valve, it's possible for the connecting pipelines between the cylinder and directional valve to hold more oil than the cylinder does. In this situation, cool, filtered oil from the reservoir never reaches the cylinder. As a result, the cylinder can overheat, and all wear particles and ingested contamination tend to remain within the cylinder. And this leads to premature failure. This problem is worse if the cylinder is mounted vertically. In this configuration, dirt particles tend to settle on the piston and its seals. And this results in premature seal wear and scoring of the cylinder tube. In this video, I demonstrate and explain two circuit modifications which solve this problem.

FREE Bonus #4
How To Select A Hydraulic Heat Exchanger video - $15 Value

Heat is public enemy #1 of every hydraulic system. This means a hot running hydraulic machine is an unreliable hydraulic machine. And the harsh reality is, in most cases, the only permanent solution to this problem is to install additional cooling capacity. Although oil cooler selection typically falls into the realm of the machine designer, this video is instructive for maintenance pros as well. AND I show you how to quickly check the amount of heat a cooler is actually rejecting - something which is very handy to know when you're faced with an overheating problem.

FREE Bonus #5
One Month's Membership To Hydraulics Pro Club - $15 Value

Hydraulics Pro Club is the forum in which I share my best and latest hydraulics intell and advice. It comprises a printed newsletter and hydraulics simulation video on CD, delivered by postal mail each month to anywhere in the world. No hydraulics topic is off limits: design, maintenance, troubleshooting, circuits, componentry and everything else in between. After your free issue, membership is $14.79/month cancellable at any time for any reason.

FREE Bonus #6
Shipping To Anywhere in the World - $20 Value

In addition to the 5 FREE bonuses above, you'll also get The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook shipped to your door anywhere in the world, FREE - a $20 value. So the investment is the same no matter where you live.

PLUS, The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook also come with a...

RISK-FREE 100% Money Back Guarantee

You take NO RISK whatsoever by evaluating The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook. Because if in the unlikely event you're not absolutely delighted for any reason - or no reason at all, I'll cheerfully refund your entire investment in full. No questions asked. There is no fine print. It's as simple as that.

Now let me break it down for you

Even though there aren't any other books that deal with the subject of maintenance and reliability in the way The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook does, a similar technical book can set you back $150. PLUS you also get a bonus ebook, three bonus videos and one month's membership to Hydraulics Pro Club - together a $72 value. Add to this FREE shipping - to anywhere in the world - a $20 value... and this comes to $242 total.

I have great news for you ...

You DO NOT need to invest $242 to get the knowledge that will transform you into a skilled and sought after maintenance specialist. Nor do you need to spend 25 years trying to figure this out for yourself (like I did!).

Because if you're one of the FIRST 7 to respond before midnight this I'm willing to give all this away to you for only $87.00.

So basically, I just gave you a $155.00 discount on what it would cost you if you COULD get all this maintenance know-how somewhere else. (And you can't).

OR, if you're a hydraulic equipment owner or user and you wanna slice 'n dice it another way: How much maintenance help can you get elsewhere for $87? On a one-time only basis, not a lot. On an ongoing basis, none at all.

As attractive as this offer is, experience tells me that only about 1 out of every 10 people who receive it will respond. Although that's OK with me from a business standpoint, it still bothers me personally.

You see, I know how much fitters, millwrights, mechanics, technicians, engineers and hydraulic equipment users will benefit from this training. I read their emails; I talk to them on the phone; I meet them personally at seminars, and hundreds each year tell me that:

"A lack of specialist knowledge is our BIGGEST hydraulics problem."

And because maintenance know-how is the key to unlocking the profits that lie hidden in every hydraulic machine, I hate the thought of someone not getting this knowledge because of some error or omission in my explanation. Which is why I've racked my brains to come up with possible reasons that might be holding you back.

Here they are:

"I don't know much about hydraulics"

You don't need extensive hydraulics know-how to profit from The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook. If you DO have some hydraulics knowledge and/or exposure to hydraulic equipment - great, you'll hit the ground running. But it's certainly NOT an essential requirement. You don't have to understand every detail of a hydraulic machine to leverage the knowledge this handbook contains. You merely have to grasp and follow PRINCIPLES.

"I prefer to work in Metric rather than US units (or vice versa)"

Both US and Metric units are used throughout. But this isn't a big issue either way since there's virtually no calculations required.

"I'm mainly interested in mobile hydraulic equipment rather than industrial (or vice versa)"

The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook is equally relevant to both mobile and industrial hydraulic applications.

"I already have a stack of books about hydraulics"

There are NO other books devoted entirely to hydraulic equipment maintenance and reliability in a meaningful way. Believe me, I've looked. There are several with the word "maintenance" in their title, but when you drill down there's no real substance behind it.

"I already own The Hydraulic Troubleshooting Handbook. How is this book different?"

The Hydraulic Troubleshooting Handbook is all about fault-finding and getting the machine back up and running after it has broken down. The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook is all about preventing it from breaking down in the first place! So the two books are VERY different. But they're also complementary to each other.

"I live beyond Siberia, so shipping will be too expensive"

Worldwide shipping is FREE, so the price is the same no matter where in the world you live.

"It looks like a great deal, but I'm not sure I can afford it right now"

Let's say you demonstrate to your boss your newly acquired maintenance expertise by achieving some quick reliability gains and cost savings. And he gives you a raise of (only) $10 per week. Then you'll recover your entire investment in less than 9 weeks. For a $20/week raise you get your investment back in under 5 weeks. And for a $50/week raise (which is more like it!) you're miles in front after only 2 weeks.

On the other hand, if you're a hydraulic equipment owner, you only have to use The Hydraulic Maintenance Handbook to prevent one breakdown; prevent one premature component failure and you'll recover your modest investment many times over.
