The best time to plant a tree ...

10 years ago today, I put my shingle up on the internet.

And HydraulicSupermarket.com was born.

There's an old saying that the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is right now.

This is of course another way of saying the sooner you start something the better--but it's NEVER too late to start.

While I'm glad I planted my Hydraulic Supermarket 'tree' 10 years ago, it wouldn't have been possible without another I plunked in the ground 10 years before that; my decision to pursue hydraulics as a specialization.

As is often the case when you make these sorts of life-defining decisions, I had no idea exactly where it was going to lead at the time.

I read a lot of biographies, and there's one thing that's consistent in every life story I read. And that is success is never achieved in a straight line.

For example, at the moment I'm reading Roald Dahl's biography. Dahl is probably most famous for writing the classic kids book; turned into movie, 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.

But Dahl started his writing career as an adult fiction author just after World War II. After a couple of early and encouraging successes, Dahl produced several spectacular failures, following which he almost gave up writing completely.

But he stuck at it, and these days, 20 years after his death, he's hailed as one of the greatest children's storytellers of all time.

Dahl's path to success is not unique in this respect; 'stick-to-it-ness' is very often the difference between failure and ultimate triumph.

And sometimes the sticking-to-it part is not entirely voluntary.

The first two years of Hydraulic Supermarket's life were extremely tough. So tough in fact, that on several occasions during those first, lean years I applied for a job.

With the benefit of hindsight, it was quite fortunate I didn't get offered any of them!

This month also marks one year since my children's book 'Farmer Mick Harvest Time Havoc' was published. And although its first-year sales are respectable, it's been no instant, runaway success.

But I take heart from the fact that the tree has been planted. In 20 years time it may have long been cut down for fire wood. Or it might still be sprouting branches and spearing down roots.

My point is, regardless of whether your decision to accumulate hydraulics knowledge began 20 years ago, or much more recently, you can and should pat yourself on the back for planting YOUR 'tree'.

And stick with it.

Because you never know where it might lead.

Yours for better hydraulics knowledge,

Brendan Casey
