Why Haven't Hydraulic Equipment Users Been Told These Facts?

Has your hydraulic machine given trouble or broken down in the past 12 months? Then read on because here's the full, uncensored story of how you can avoid those $200 - $500 service calls, avoid those $1,000 - $5,000+ repair bills, and enjoy a reliable hydraulic machine that does NOT let you down at the most inconvenient times.

Brendan Casey, hydraulics author, educator and publisher.

Dear Hydraulics User,

How many times in the past year have you lost productive time waiting for a problem to be fixed? And how many times have you had to fork out your hard-earned for the repair bills that follow?

All of these breakdowns may have seemed tragic to you at the moment they happened--but here's the real tragedy:

90% of These Breakdowns Are Unnecessary!

In fact, according to industry sources, more than 70% of spare parts sold for hydraulic equipment are used to replace defective components. And the cause of 90% of these defects can be traced to improper operation or maintenance.

And these numbers are supported by my own observation during 25 years working in hydraulic repair shops. During this time I kept seeing the same pattern repeat itself over and over:

  • Failed hydraulic component comes into shop along with worried owner who's anxious to know why it has failed after a relatively short time in service.
  • Based on what I saw after tear-down, I would explain the cause of failure -- and how it could have been prevented.
  • Machine owner leaves thousands of dollars poorer with repaired component and a hard-learned lesson on hydraulic equipment maintenance.

In other words, during my two and a half decades as a hydraulics industry insider, I've been in the fortunate position of being able to observe -- and learn from -- the mistakes and omissions hydraulic equipment users make when it comes to taking care of their machines. Mistakes that make a lot of machinery dealers and repair shop owners very rich. And I've worked for enough of them to know.

I'm sure you don't need me to tell you how expensive hydraulic pumps, motors and cylinders, are these days. We're talking thousands and in many cases, tens of thousands of dollars.

So when you start to add up how BIG the spare parts business is, it doesn't take much to figure out poor maintenance practices are costing hydraulic equipment users billions of dollars every year. And I'm certainly not alone in making this call:

"I think Mr Casey is being very conservative in his estimate of failures attributed to lack of maintenance. I have 40 years of hydraulics experience and would put that number considerably higher. If modern hydraulic components are installed and maintained properly, the spare parts business wouldn't be viable."

The good news is you can avoid paying for your machine dealer's holiday home - and save yourself a truck-load of downtime and aggravation as well -- just by following proven maintenance practices and procedures.

Trouble is, the information you need to prevent unnecessary failures and maximize the service life of your hydraulic equipment isn't widely available. It's not that it's rocket science - far from it. But you won't find it in the machine manual and it's not taught in your typical "how-it-works", hydraulics class.

As a result, most owners, operators, mechanics, technicians and engineers are not on top of this issue. And I'm not alone in this view either:

"For the last 13 years I was technical manager for Demag/Komatsu mining shovels Southern Africa. And I know there's a SHOCKING amount of IGNORANCE in the field of hydraulics: oil sampling, oil viscosity, filtration, component change-out procedures and cooling systems are often blatantly ignored or misunderstood and the machine manufacturer is then put under pressure for warranties."

Gerald Annandale

But it's not their fault. 'Cos they haven't had the opportunity to learn. And the reason for this is simple: Very few people really know this stuff. And of those who do, most aren't willing to teach it. Why? Because as I've explained already, there's a lot more money to be made by fixing it after it breaks.

So how did I get to become an expert at this? Let me start by saying I didn't learn it from a book or through a course at a community college or university. What I know has been accumulated during 25 years working on everything from farm machinery right up to 600-ton hydraulic excavators used in open-cut mining.

And I don't mean yapping about it from the comfort of an air-conditioned office either. I mean hands-on, at-the-coal-face experience. As you know, you can't buy this sort of education.

In fact, as I mentioned earlier, THE most valuable education I got in this area was being able to learn from the mistakes I saw being made by hundreds of hydraulic equipment owners, while working in hydraulic repair shops.

In terms of what these mistakes cost these customers in repairs, it's safe to say my accumulation of this knowledge cost a bunch of hydraulic equipment owners $1 million dollars and perhaps more. And I'm NOT kidding.

Anyway, back in 2000 when I left my last job in the hydraulics industry to go out on my own, I decided to write a book to explain this stuff to the people who can profit from it the most. People like you, who sign the checks to keep hydraulic equipment running.

It's called Insider Secrets to Hydraulics. And no matter what type of hydraulic equipment you own, operate, repair or maintain, the information it contains applies to you.

"Insider Secrets to Hydraulics should be on the bookshelf of every engineer, supervisor, planner and technician who deals with hydraulic equipment... it's worth its weight in gold."

Sandy Dunn
Maintenance Consultant
Assetivity

It shows you how to avoid the most common -- and costly mistakes in three categories:

  1. preventative maintenance;
  2. troubleshooting and problem solving, and
  3. repair and replacement of hydraulic components.

"Insider Secrets to Hydraulics covers the important stuff and is easy to read... I would like to buy 20 more copies for the plant and technical managers of Orbis Corporation."

Bernie Carlisle
Orbis Corporation

Here's a sample of what's covered:

Contamination control is the most important preventative maintenance routine for hydraulic equipment, right? WRONG! And I'll explain why.

Why hydraulic oil is THE most important component of any hydraulic system and not a consumable to be purchased on price alone.

The quickest, easiest way to check if you're using the right hydraulic oil. One that prolongs hydraulic component life.

Do you know it costs 10-times more to remove contamination than it does to exclude it in the first place? How to identify and rectify abnormal 'contamination load'.

Three ways oil contamination destroys hydraulic components. And why one of them is far more dangerous than the other two.

How to determine the right oil cleanliness level for different types of hydraulic systems. And the secrets to achieving and maintaining it.

A simple proactive maintenance routine that can save you thousands of dollars. And why it's commonly ignored.

Does your hydraulic machine get hot? What NEVER to do when this happens. PLUS -- how to eliminate overheating problems and the damage they cause.

The secret to identifying faulty circuit-protection devices -- before they cause hydraulic component failures.

When to schedule hydraulic component change-outs - to minimize operating costs.

What you must always do when installing a hydraulic component - to avoid cutting short its service life.

The 6 truths which are every troubleshooter's best friend. Even when you're faced with the most complex of hydraulic problems.

One thing you must always do before reaching for any diagnostic tools when troubleshooting. Skip this and there's a good chance you'll end up with egg on your face.

A commonly overlooked problem that could be quietly destroying your machine's hydrostatic transmission.

One thing you must always do BEFORE you call-in a hydraulic technician.

How to tell when a hydraulic technician is over-charging you.

One thing you should never say to a hydraulic technician - unless you want to pay more.

How to recognize and avoid costly troubleshooting mistakes and get the correct diagnosis - the first time.

A simple technique that can reduce component repair costs by as much as 50%.

The techniques you must use to get the best deal on a replacement component and know with absolute certainty you've obtained the lowest possible price.

How to carry out effective repairs on hydraulic cylinders.

Two questions you MUST always ask when choosing a hydraulic repair shop.

The four most common repair rip-offs and how to avoid them.

The easiest way to safeguard new component warranty and how to get free repairs after warranty has expired.

And that's not all. Now in its 2nd edition and with 10,711 copies sold, Insider Secrets to Hydraulics is the ONLY book to cover both the technical AND the commercial issues involved in the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of hydraulic equipment. Which means it not only covers preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, component repair and replacement; it also exposes the unethical industry practices that increase MRO costs.

Armed with this information, you'll save hundreds, and possibly thousands of dollars every year on the maintenance and repair of your hydraulic equipment. But just as important, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you'll never again be taken for a ride. You'll have a rare advantage, as you turn the tables on hydraulic technicians and sales reps.
