Thinking in Systems, Troubleshooting with Principles

The Hydraulic Troubleshooting HandbookJules Nijst is a retired oilwell engineer from the Netherlands. He read The Hydraulic Troubleshooting Handbook recently and sent me this note:

“I’ve received your book and what a great book this is. Brendan, this book is a delight to read. So well explained in short paragraphs to encapsulate a fact. I catch myself becoming aware all the time while reading,

Can You Set a Relief Valve Using a Hand Pump?

A millwright recently completed a 5-day basic hydraulics training. He plans to use his recently acquired hydraulics knowledge to check and set the relief valves in the circuit shown below, using a hand pump. Valves 04 and 06 are both relief valves (no external drains are shown). The rear section of the tandem pump 01 provides two pilot pressures: Pp1 … Read more

What’s Causing This Hydraulic Cylinder to Drift?

A rookie systems engineer designed the (simplified) circuit shown below. The cylinder extends and retracts (auto cycles) as part of an industrial process. During commissioning, the cylinder cycled as intended. But as soon as the hydraulic system reached operating temperature, the cylinder started drifting out between cycles, causing the PLC to shut down the entire process.

The systems engineer had … Read more
